WHO launches global suicide report

This first WHO report on suicide prevention calculates that more than 800 000 people die by suicide every year – around one person every 40 seconds. It draws on evidence from around the world to indicate that efforts must be taken to limit access to means, including availability of pesticides and firearms. The report also concludes that it is critical that national governments commit to suicide prevention activity.  Currently, only 28 countries are known to have national suicide prevention strategies. England’s current strategy was published in 2013.
